friday pretties on a saturday morning in a village...

friday pretties...
a gorgeously rare morning to myself...
i love school holidays...i truly do...
but every now & again...a day to myself is pretty heavenly...
i had the day, almost a whole day, to sew...catch up on orders...cook & pick up after my divinely lazy busy family...
but before i did all of this i wandered through the village...
& drank coffee...
& hung out in second hand shops...
& just stopped for a moment on my own...yep...on my own...
i picked up this *lovely-shaped* pile of goodies from *oxfam*...
i wasn't looking for colour today- just shape & form...
& how perfect is that little muddy brown one...
colour- hmmmm...
shape- mmmm...

lovely shaped, ugly old left on the shelf *vintage* vases looking for a little colour...
i have been desperate to try the virtues of my new found spray-bestie on some ceramic ware...
i have a love affair that is border-line manic for all china, that started when i was in my teens on the beaches...
where all my friends were saving for shopping spree's to the mall...
i was working to fund a china/homewares obsession that meant when i eventually moved out, i was ready to have my space...
no ikea box sets for my first house...no plastic cups...
but we also had no furniture...
we literally covered outdoor furniture in calico slip covers that i made for our indoor dining table & did the same with moving boxes for bedside tables...
but man...did we have great plates...& glasses...& bedspreads...we were young & very happy...
so...having just discovered this *spray-virtually-everything* amazing paint-i can very safely say it would have been my paint bestie way way back then too....

you know how much i love chippy...& worn & old...& dented & french...
but thrown in with all my authentically old vintage pieces, i do love me a bit of almost modern simplicity...
simple lines...
lovely shapes...
no patina or perfect chippy-ness taking your eye away from the *form* of a piece...

i could never have done this little experiment on any of my so very loved, used-every-single-day-old china...
but the experiment also needed pieces of a particularly interesting shape...
the little squat bud vase with it's beautiful blue insides...
stocky almost...but sweet with a rim wide enough for a teeny bunch of flowers...more than just a bud or two...
& that beautiful fan of a vase...muddy coloured & a little too sadly unaware of it's beautiful lines...
a modern, simple take on some wonderful old cast shapes...

i can now see a very cool, very sweet looking tea-party happening in our garden before the end of summer...
my chippy old french garden table, wine, some nibbly bits & some lovely english girlfriends...
i'll get the B.B {british bestie} onto that...
hear that janey- my front garden in two weeks sweetie...
start thinking about it...& where we can *put* the kids ;)

when i walk the village on my own...no kiddos...no bikes or scooters or drink bottles in tow...
i walk the long way...winding up & down past the houses i covert love...
aahhhh-ing over the fences at the garden's i wish i had the patience for...
always pinching a few bits...a few friday pretties...
hydrangeas...are everywhere at this time of year...
beautiful colours...
beautiful shapes...
beautiful in these vases...

that is one seriously shapely little vase....L.O.V.E  I.T!
& love my chippy chair ;)

friday pretties
shared on a saturday morning
because when the storm of kids came home last night
there were endless stories of muddy stomping through the english countryside
&
pizza's to make!

have a bloomin' great weekend gals
love me in spray paint heaven

chippy old boxes & plimsolls...

so...the lovely miss.audrey got the plimsolls & i got the old box...
if the rosey sandshoes had fit me, i have to admit gals...i would have got both ;)
that's the beauty of being six & seeing nothing odd about your mummy loving an old box the same way you love flowery rosey new shoes...

so...over our weekend at the seaside, a little welsh loveliness was thrown into the back of the car...
the locals giggled at me...
in fact, our dear, unknowing ;) welsh friends ribbed me quite a bit...
but i knew that this little box was a hidden gem...
actually they'll probably still giggle at it...& definately at me...
but i'm ok with that...
cause i got the box...
& my kid got the shoes...!

remember my chippy ol' painted ladder with numbered steps that i {& quite a gang of you!} loved *here*...?
well i haven't had much use for the gorgeous swirly-curly french number *five* in the stencil set i used for this...
but i figured...there are five of us...& since we drag out stuff to the front garden in various boxes & milk crates most days...
i thought i'd add this as a very *make-me-happy-alternative* to an ugly plastic serving tray...
full of napkins, tea towels, crappy kids plastic ikea cups...& french kid cups ;)

i used the same french stencil patterns that i used on the step ladder & various other battered vintage french tins that i've managed to sneak into this old house...
they are super simple to use & rinse off in warm water...
i bought them on etsy *here*...& use them pretty regularly round here...

so...sweet bloggy friends...
my oh so humble words of wisdom are: if you see an old box for a fiver & your welsh friends start giggling...
nab it...chuck it in the back of the car, under the kids feet with the sunscreen & that mountain of sand the kids felt a need to share...
& then smugly come home & stencil it...
then invite them round for a corona & lime served from that box...
they'll still giggle...but they won't say no to the beer...
& they may even try to smuggle home the box...

maybe even the kids plimsolls
the ones that were really meant to be mine anyway
~~~
do you ever do that?
buy it for your babies only 'cause it doesn't fit you?
i've been doing it for 13 years
&
i still haven't tired of it!!
~~~

go buy some frenchy stencils on *etsy*
they are soo addictive
...enjoy...

seaside village lovely...

a life made lovely...
a welsh seaside village...sand dunes...friends...happy kids...sandy toes...
old stone buildings...crabbing...ships & salt air...
giggles...trails through the dunes...fish & chips...
stunning hills...beautiful estuary's...cobblestone paths...
old pubs...antique shops...new old boxes stashed in the back of the car...

there is absolutely nothing like time on the beach for our family...
we adore the sandy feet...
the knotty hair...
the sand dunes...
salty faces...
laughing kids...

the welsh in the kids & their dad comes out in all it's glory...
aussie welsh kids fishing, crabbing & hanging out with the locals...
perfect...

hope you all had a wonderful weekend
nothing like a mini break
in another country
that you can drive to
...as australians we will never get over the excitement of doing this...

friday pretties & bloomin' village roses...

friday pretties...
ok...these are not my roses...
from my garden...
but they are from our village grocer...

i love fridays, as you know, and today we are heading off through the countryside to Wales...
this means throwing things into upteen bags...
packing everything from my Hunter wellies to my birkenstocks & making room for Miss.Audrey's vast amount of soft toys that for some reason need a sea side break!
when is it ever about the mama girls?!

so...
to kick start my mini vacation i wandered early...& on my own...up to the village to buy some blooms for friday pretties...
beautiful big english roses...
wrapped in brown paper...

how heavenly are these...
they smell gorgeous & they look pretty good just dumped in my other milk crate...
the one i hadn't mentioned to you yet...oooh i am in serious love with this one!
so roses & new a *country living* mag in hand i had a wander & bought a coffee...
& came home to lovely kids not packing bags!
hence the blooms dumped in the milk crate & left for a while...

friday pretties...
dumped in an old dented metal milk crate...
making me smile as i shove stuff into suitcases & dolls bags & waterproof bags & beach baskets...

have a wonderful weekend
it's friday-yehar
do something you normally wouldn't
hang out with your kids
buy roses

vintage milk crate love...

well...these are the little things that make the move abroad, 12,000 miles from home pretty lovely...
vintage milk crates & garden roses...
don't get me wrong...the experience is what we're really doing it for... ;)
but when an english vintage goodie finds me- it really does just send that message home that travel is heaven...
especially when it surrounds you with chippy old things to one day take home to the beaches on the other  side of the globe...

when we first started talking to people about our move to ol'Blighty three years ago...
we talked about travel...country living...the experiences that would shape us as a family...
what we didn't talk about...what we hadn't really considered was our day to day life here in the english countryside...
we'd had other friends live abroad...they did it all with Ikea furniture & a time frame...
we've done it with neither...& it's worked for us...
we've slowly gathered *bits* of england & europe that will continue to take us back to our time here when we are once more living with sandy toes & beach towels on the line...

so...with a beach house of our life stored back in Sydney...
we have gathered here a ridiculously huge lovely big whallop of vintage english life to add to it all...
our beach & country chippy bits, will one day all be thrown back in together & i'm hoping my usual *don't follow anyone else- just collect what you love- & it will all work* theory will kick in...

it's funny how a broken old metal milk crate can really make my day...
& it's even funnier that it now makes the hubsters- ok maybe not *makes*...but it's on his radar at last...
truly...the man walked in from work & instantly spotted the random roses & crate on the table...
"love that...!" he shouted to the kitchen, on the way to put out the re-cycling...
to be fair...he didn't stop & examine it as i had all day...
but girls...he noticed it and he commented...!
see...priceless memories...
i will recall his very interested slightly rushed comment when i see this sitting on my table, with shells & sandy beach towels, sunscreen & freckled faces one day back in Sydney...
"love that...!"

so...i guess the moral here is
buy chippy lovely old stuff that makes you happy
&
one day *others* will love you a little bit more for the memories

what d'ya think??

a good life wednesday...

hello lovelies...
it's all wet & summery supposedly summer here this morning...
yep...i know this is why our *perfectly english vege garden* is blooming like mad...
& yep...i know this is all good as it leads to little people eating fresh garden produce...
but...
this mama needs to feel the rays of the sun on her face...
to not let go of summer quite yet...
she needs to keep throwing those goodies in her bag for the much-needed little trip to Greece that is coming up...
she needs to put a cork in the rain...

so...
today...i'm just going to spend a little time sorting photos...
i know...we all have them...endless digital pickies of life...travels...birthdays...
but today i'm going to lose myself in the country ones...
the ones that shower us in warm memories of why we love our life in the english countryside...
one day, back on the beaches of sydney, we will wish for little moments of these days...
walking with the kiddos...
breathing in the freshest of country air...
stopping at a local pub, serving the localist of produce for lunch...
*moments of a good life*...

a truly *good life wednesday*

shared with others stopping to smell the lovely moments in life

a life made lovely in an english vege garden...

hello sweet bloggy friends...
i'm sitting in the kiddos playroom...looking out the big bay windows at our little garden allotment...
it's a new thing for us...growing our own vege...
&
believe me, if i can do it, anyone can...
not that i don't have a green thumb- i just had a mental block thing happening...
it's taken me three years of living in the english countryside to start thinking like an english gal...
not a beach-reared...do-not-water-anything-with-the hose-unless-it-is-after-5pm-&-a-monday-or-a-friday-kinda-aussie-gardening-gal...

you see...in Australia water restrictions are pretty normal...
well...they were three years ago when we made the big move north of the globe...
i was able to water my garden two afternoons a  week, & only after 5pm...
car washing on the drive- was a seriously big no-no...
kiddos thrown under a sprinkler for the afternoon- even bigger!
memories that i had made growing up were not being made for our kids!

so...now we find ourselves in the land of water...
endless water where kiddos are free to live under a running-non-stop-sprinkling-system...
but for our aussie beach-reared kids this luxury is missing one element-constant hot warm weather!
this does all work for an english vege garden though, i now know...
it's the summer rain...sun...rain...sun thing that get's everything up & thriving...
three years folks & at long last i have cottoned on to why my BB (british bestie) has the coolest home vege garden i've ever seen!

so...i now find myself sitting, tea in hand, watching over our garden of vege smiling to my self...
audrey has discovered that not all green food is *disgusting*...
(yes i have to sadly admit that our littlest lovely has used this word many-a-time when faced with a plate piece of greenery on her plate!)
she scored a pretty cute little metal watering can & a tin bucket to go vege & lettuce picking & it's working!
she gathers herbs for every meal...& has pulled her elder sister & brother up on the herb names & what *mummy actually asked for*!
should have pulled my finger out a few years ago...& we'd have had years of success at the dinner table with her greens...

so...i'm smiling big that we have got there in the end...
we've had other big moments over the last three years...
maybe i appretiate this little allotment in our front garden a little more as the journey's been longer...
the gardening journey...
the one that can involve lots of lovely water...
a garden sprinkler & laughing kids...
&
french watering cans of love...

a life made lovely monday
a thriving vege garden in the english countryside
watered endlessly by aussie beach-reared kiddos
&
eaten by a very fussy 6 year old cutie
that's gotta be good for the soul

vintage potato basket love & my thrift-hunting perfect kid...

mooorning....
this is what i'm shouting up to my babies all snuggled upstairs in their beds, windows open listening to the british summer rain...
so...mooorning across the countryside & globe to you lot...

i have a lovely story, with a wee make-over thrown in for y'all today...
i don't know if you have sons or daughters or not...
or if you just *borrow* little ones when you need an excuse to...you know...see Toy Story 3 over the hols...or to buy the giant sized pop corn *for-the-kids* ;) at the movies...
but i have both...& my boy just keeps on giving...
Sol is a well-trained-vintage-spotting-kid...
he spotted these two little gems at 50 paces in our village market last week...

potato picking baskets...
i'd alluded to them many times round the garden table...
i'd mentioned many times the one frenchy potato picking basket i had seen at a vintage shop up the road...
i thought no-one was listening...
well i was wrong...big time!
the kid was listening...
we were heading up to the weekly farmers market in our village square...
it's getting bigger & more varied as summer rolls on...
not that we gave two hoots about the blocks of farm butter or endless strawberries when we spotted these gorgeous things...

he bolted raced calmly up to the vintagey stall & nabbed those babies...
one over each arm...& grinned at me...
i honestly didn't care how much they were- he was so delighted with himself i would've paid anything...
{just for the record Ritchie honey- not really anything!}
the one i had been lusting over *up-the-road* was £50...that's a lot of potatoes!!
i readied myself...spotted the line at the bank...& nearly fell over when she said that he could have them both for £15...!

the kid is a up-cycling-make-mum-delightfully-happy-vintage-spotting-genius!
look at these lovelies....!

but...yellow is probably my least fave house colour & whilst i love red...it's just not me...
i lived with them like this for the weekend...
i moved them around & talked myself into the virtues of yellow & red sitting alongside our mix match of loved goodies...
but it wouldn't last...& again the genius kid suggested i paint them white...
i seriously love this trained up boy...
& then, to nail the decision, i came across this stuff...
Painter's Touch - multi purpose spray paint in *heirloom white*...{check it out here- Rust-oleum}

it is heaven & convenience in a aerosol can...
it's instant...consistent & perfect for fiddly jobs like old wire potato picking baskets...
i am buying shares in the company...
how brilliant is this stuff!!
you can spray wood, metal , ceramics- virtually anything...
it's my new household drug of choice...

the gals beds are up soon...
black to white wrought iron...
then that lovely little steel-legged school desk in the playroom...
those rotten photo frames tossed in a  box in my sewing room...
there is no stopping me...
all thanks to my gorgeous boy!

what d'ya think?
don't you adore a story of love, family, potato baskets & awesome time-saving spray paint...
a little make-over encouraged by a soccer-scooter-skateboard-park-mad-10-year-old-kid...
it made my day!

so...
next time you see a perfectly shaped-hideous coloured jug at a market...
grab it...& spray the little treasure...
stash that wicker basket -it's too easy to paint now...
throw that stool in the boot...
they can all be changed to perfectly vintaged & lovely in 10 minutes tops...

p.s....
i've got my new FB page up & running...
i'm putting up extra blog *photo shoot* pickies & other creations...
great websites i shop on & blog discoveries...
love to hear what you think on all these things & more...
come & say hi...

xxx

p.p.s...
i dropped my canon dslr off a park bench a week ago- that's how much i love watching my kids do skate tricks in the park- i jumped & dropped my camera!
so you'll have to bare with me & my i-phone pickies this week as my beloved never-leaves-my-side camera is at the *canon spa*!
