Flowers in the beach house...

Like many parents across our big beautiful land...we sent all our kids back to school this past week.

We have three kids, and of course, their return to school was staggered over three days!

We tend to embrace this by giving each child a day to *choose* how they would like us to spend *their* last day of school holidays...it works and everyone goes back feeling just a *bit special*.

Anyway, right or wrong, the kids have all had their days and now it's almost time for one of my own!
Until then I am tidying up the divine chaos of 8 {yep you read right}...8 long weeks of summer hols in this little beach house.

I start with the usual room-by-room total overhaul that we mother's like to do...makes us feel in control of the new year and all that...then I fill the fridge, freezer and pantry feeling pretty on top of it all!

And then...I drink waaay to much tea, and focus on flowers and greenery to make the house feel fresh and overhauled...

All summer long we have big sprouts of blooms all over the house...collected from walks to the beach, from our garden, and the fruit market- but I do love the ritual when school goes back of sorting all my vases, washing down all the table tops and starting with a new haul of greenery.

I'm not a mad flower lover- aside from jasmine and lavender all over the garden looking a little wild, and I would love to have a garden bed of English peonies- but the reality of living by the ocean, battered by sea air is that that is not going to happen here!
So instead I focus on flowers that do thrive along the coast that have wonderful shape, are a great size, are simple and can be stuck in a vase, with other pieces of nature, to really catch your eye.

It's about volume, and height and simple beauty.
Just about anything works if the size of the vase is generous, and the flower/greenery combination a little unusual.
To get a lot of wow for your buck, or from your garden greens, it's great to throw in a branch or two and whatever actually grows in your neck of the woods at that particular time of year.

Like eating food in season, it's simpler and cheaper to decorate our houses with what's on our doorstep, in nature, the same way.

So...find that flower that really embraces your season, and grab a few random pieces of wood, dried twig or fallen branch to build up a story that catches your eye every time you walk in your door.
Make a *moment* of filling your vase with something you have collected- not just the supermarket bunch thrown in at the check out.

I recycle so much of what we stick in with our flowers- I love that...and I love that collecting particular flowers, as the seasons change each year, remind me of summers before...winters before...and days before.

Frangipanni's say home and summer to me...they remind me of christmas and hot days by the surf...they make me smile that smile when you know you have long, long days of sunshine ahead...

We all have a flower that does that for us...I'm throwing them all over the beach house here and it smells like family to me...

Enjoy your day!

Virtual Coffee {live}

Afternoon all...Virtual Coffee time...

Come snuggle up in a cane chair...

I've got the gorgeous Florence on the new stereo...and I am loving my old iPod {the original and best!}

Tea on the back balcony in the afternoon winter sun and a roast in the oven...

Just the kind of afternoon I've been needing!

If we were really meeting for a coffee this arvo, we'd have to talk about Florence!
She is one of my all time femme fatale music loves!
What do you think?

The iPod is on serious rotation this afternoon - from Jack Johnson, Ed Sheeran and Paolo Nutini, to Florence and Adele...

Do you have a request sweet friend?

That's the beauty of iTunes isn't it- it's like playing home DJ...!

Your request is instantly granted!

You're the guest I will play you anything...

So...we've got your tunes sorted...let's talk all things Apple.

Do you Apple?

We have quite a truck load of iPods and iPhones, owned by various members of the family.

We sync regularly ;)

And there is nothing like music shared throughout the house is there...

If we were really sharing a tea and lolling in the sun, I'd also have to talk IKEA...
I'm taking my big girl tomorrow- IKEA with a 15 year old is the only way to go I've decided.

I have done years with all three kids in various modes of pram, stroller, baby capsule, toddler, three school aged and semi-teens....

I have to say hitting IKEA with one teen, who is a straight A *Design & Tech* student, hell bent on a career in some incredibly creative industry, is the way to go!

She see's IKEA as a total Design assignment waiting for her and I to make something of it.

She see's IKEA, in the way that IKEA designers want us all to see IKEA.

She is visualising our vintage home, full of beloved goodies from around the globe, sitting alongside Sweedish designs of simplicity.

Can you tell I'm just a little excited...and there will be meat balls ;)

After discussing at great length IKEA and the virtues of mixing life and home up a little, I'd have to ask for your list.

I'm more than happy to take those of you who live a zillion miles from IKEA with us tomorrow...via instagram or FB...

I'll take your list, I'll check out those things your looking at on line, and I'll share my thoughts...or actually I'll share Miss.Cool & 15's thoughts...

She got them all from me anyway ;) ...so I'll share our thoughts....

L.O.V.E these days...Virtual Coffe...{sigh}

Before you go...the roses are an early gift to myself...

I like to stretch out a birthday...the number is a cool one when written in the sand- believe me I've tried it...

It's just not so cool when you are buying on line, and that nasty little box that requires a year of birth pops up...and you are scrolling forever for a wee while!

Anyhow...back to the roses- stunning colour...beautiful smell and slightly indulgent- perfect!

Thanks for swinging by...
Love having you here always....

Coastal Autumn decorating...simple & warm...

happy friday sweet bloggy friends...

i've not been feeling *fantastic* the last two days- & have spent a little of this time trawling through images on my laptop...

it makes me feel constructive without actually doing anything much...

these are from last spring, filling the kitchen table of our big old house in the English countryside...

the one that couldn't be more different to our little sandy floored, white weathered house here on the beaches...

although there has been much shleping of bits around the house, with all the rain the Australian coast line has been getting...

lotsa loads of washing not being hung on the line- but bunged endlessly in the dryer...

a wet puppy to take walking & then calm down...

big warming casserole's on the stove top...

Autumn days are really here on the beaches...

i'm looking forward to the small changes this brings...but i could do with much less flipping rain...we're living like Noah on his ark- god knows how he did it with two of each animal in tow!

yes...these gorgeously blue blooms were from spring in the English countryside...

i loved filling the house in ol'Blighty with blooms- endless colour on those grey days & an extra shot of colour when the sun did shine...

i love filling the house here too...our little beach house is all white walls & dark floorboards...& this year, our first back on the Coast here in Sydney, i want to embrace the seasons we do get...

the small changes between seasons i'm going to really mark this year- it's something we loved to do living in England...embracing the seasons...

it doesn't take much to change even the simplest of beach houses to embrace the seasons...

introducing a little colour is the easiest cheapest way to change the feel of any room...

& i'm always up for a room *move-around*- even when the room has only been in place since one may have leapt off the plane from England a few days before Christmas....

so here on the Coast, we are filling vintage potato baskets with big Autumn leaves collected whilst puppy walking...

we're making shell & Autumn leaf collections...side by side...

a little more brown in our white beach cottage...a little bit of rich warmth...

warm timbers...chippy collected beach items alongside our Country treasures...

*rope-wound* old oars...

vintage cane chairs dragged indoors...

wool throws on the linen couch...

many of you bloggy friends are heading into what i hear has been a gorgeous spring- but from years of living in the beautiful but changeable countryside of England, i truly know that each day is a blessing...

when the sun is out...daffodils growing by the truck load can lead you to think that the cold days are behind you...when one is from Australia, living on the other side of the globe- one can take a while to cotton on that each day of spring is a delight not to be taken for granted...

here in Australia- as we embrace Autumn, it seems each day without rain is a blessing & likewise, not to be taken for granted...

between you, me & anyone who will listen to my moaning, this is not what we came back to the beaches for...endless awful constant  a little rain each week...so embracing the change in season is giving me us a focus away from the wet weather...

cheap & cheerful...simplicity at it's best...

are you changing your little old beach cottage for Autumn?
or
bringing the Spring indoors with big bunches of blooms as the weather warms up?

...wherever you are my side, or the other, i hope you're embracing the seasons...

let me know how it's going at yours

friday pretties- a beach life...

a beach life....

sandy feet...

freckled noses...

bikini's on the line...

straw hats...

for me...I'm still in the *bring it all on* moment...

BUT....

i'm beginning to crazy desperately ridiculously miss our stuff from the English countryside that is

sailing it's way to these shores now...

i'm ready for foofing this little house by the beaches with a bit of country...balance up the influx

of shells, sand on the floor & smell of sunscreen...{which i must admit- i adore!}

so until then...like my wardrobe {see my rave here}, our house is on a simple rotation of the few goodies

i threw into storage here in Oz....

all the gaps are being filled by flowers...

it works for me...

it works for the simple, fresh, we-have-no-furniture-indoor-gourmet-kinda-camping that we seem to

be doing here at the moment...

friday pretties filling the *i-want-my-stuff-from-ol'Blighty* gap...

it ain't going to suffice forever gals- but it's buffeting some of the longing...

hope you have a wonderful weekend...whatever part of the globe your wandering through...

we're beaching...soccer-ing...socialising & some of us are waiting...

*it's all good Down Under*

see ya monday for a french putty coloured kitchen chalkboard

*make it monday* post

friday pretties & bloomin' village roses...

friday pretties...
ok...these are not my roses...
from my garden...
but they are from our village grocer...

i love fridays, as you know, and today we are heading off through the countryside to Wales...
this means throwing things into upteen bags...
packing everything from my Hunter wellies to my birkenstocks & making room for Miss.Audrey's vast amount of soft toys that for some reason need a sea side break!
when is it ever about the mama girls?!

so...
to kick start my mini vacation i wandered early...& on my own...up to the village to buy some blooms for friday pretties...
beautiful big english roses...
wrapped in brown paper...

how heavenly are these...
they smell gorgeous & they look pretty good just dumped in my other milk crate...
the one i hadn't mentioned to you yet...oooh i am in serious love with this one!
so roses & new a *country living* mag in hand i had a wander & bought a coffee...
& came home to lovely kids not packing bags!
hence the blooms dumped in the milk crate & left for a while...

friday pretties...
dumped in an old dented metal milk crate...
making me smile as i shove stuff into suitcases & dolls bags & waterproof bags & beach baskets...

have a wonderful weekend
it's friday-yehar
do something you normally wouldn't
hang out with your kids
buy roses

vintage milk crate love...

well...these are the little things that make the move abroad, 12,000 miles from home pretty lovely...
vintage milk crates & garden roses...
don't get me wrong...the experience is what we're really doing it for... ;)
but when an english vintage goodie finds me- it really does just send that message home that travel is heaven...
especially when it surrounds you with chippy old things to one day take home to the beaches on the other  side of the globe...

when we first started talking to people about our move to ol'Blighty three years ago...
we talked about travel...country living...the experiences that would shape us as a family...
what we didn't talk about...what we hadn't really considered was our day to day life here in the english countryside...
we'd had other friends live abroad...they did it all with Ikea furniture & a time frame...
we've done it with neither...& it's worked for us...
we've slowly gathered *bits* of england & europe that will continue to take us back to our time here when we are once more living with sandy toes & beach towels on the line...

so...with a beach house of our life stored back in Sydney...
we have gathered here a ridiculously huge lovely big whallop of vintage english life to add to it all...
our beach & country chippy bits, will one day all be thrown back in together & i'm hoping my usual *don't follow anyone else- just collect what you love- & it will all work* theory will kick in...

it's funny how a broken old metal milk crate can really make my day...
& it's even funnier that it now makes the hubsters- ok maybe not *makes*...but it's on his radar at last...
truly...the man walked in from work & instantly spotted the random roses & crate on the table...
"love that...!" he shouted to the kitchen, on the way to put out the re-cycling...
to be fair...he didn't stop & examine it as i had all day...
but girls...he noticed it and he commented...!
see...priceless memories...
i will recall his very interested slightly rushed comment when i see this sitting on my table, with shells & sandy beach towels, sunscreen & freckled faces one day back in Sydney...
"love that...!"

so...i guess the moral here is
buy chippy lovely old stuff that makes you happy
&
one day *others* will love you a little bit more for the memories

what d'ya think??

check out other shabby goodies with a pot of tea
&
a chippy old crate of something

re-discovering our beach life...

morning lovelies...
i can't tell you how much your messages yesterday made me smile...
ok...there were a few tears in there too...well maybe more than a few...
i feel like i've fallen back into the open arms of dear bloggy friends...
without judgement...question...comment...just friendship & support...
i write here for myself...to recognise my thoughts...to record our times as a family living abroad...
BUT...
you all have been the most delightful, blessed, wonderful extra to this...
i truly can't tell you how much all your words mean to me...
& i value these on-line friendships more than you could know...
from Ritchie & I thankyou for recognising this friendship with your thoughts here...

returning home to the beaches of beautiful sydney was like a hug...
it's what i know...
it's where we are from...
it's the beginning of our kiddos...our little family...
so many memories came flooding back...
it was a blessing to be there, to be hit with the salty smell of the surf...
it was lovely to return to the beach boardwalk where i have pushed three beautiful babies in prams endlessly over the years...
to see sydney in winter at it's best...
yep...guys this is winter!!
does it get any better!!??

the hours we slipped away & spent re-discovering our beach life was lovely...
we all fell in love with sandy feet & salty skin all over again...
of course, three years in the english countryside has toughened our crew up to deal with the cold in a way that most Manly locals wouldn't understand...
we didn't...
but once you've swam in Scotland in spring...this is a piece of gorgeous cake!
so...in they all went...
no wetties...just boardies & bikinis...
their uncle wore a full length steamer...piker...
he needs to be thrown off a wharf in Scotland!
as i said...guys...this is winter...

so...sydney was a time to re-connect with family...
with memories...
with favourite *moments* of our other life...
our beach life...
hibiscus...
sydney buildings...
salty air...
good coffee...
life on the other side of the planet...
the life that makes up the other part of us...

it feels really good, really *right*,  to be back here writing again
i was struggling with the *reasons* for blogging after such an emotional difficult few weeks
but your thoughts & words have me back on track
i need you guys
you make me smile
thanks for still being there for me

friday pretties & peonies in french teapots...

it's friday...
you all know i lurve fridays...
L.O.V.E...
today has seen one kiddo home from school sick...
one new gate at the end of our garden path...
two dozen cupcakes baked for our village *club day* parade & bbq tomorrow...
three loads of washing done & hung on *this* good old fashioned perfect clothesline...
another lot of herbs planted in the vege garden out the front...
&
all the general kiddo school/after school stuff that happens on a daily basis...
&
it's all good- even the washing bit...
there is nothing like timing english weather well enough to get three loads of washing dried..
outside...
on the line...
i'm feeling seriously cool & righteous now tucked up in bed with a cup of tea, a pile of house mags & my laptop...

i'm snuggled up listening to the kiddos reading or sleeping in their beds...
&
the hubster watching & commenting to the screen on Wimbleton...
he loves tennis...
i love tennis...
&
peonies...
in enamel french teapots...
&
being snuggled in bed when it's raining after a day of sunshine...

there are few flowers that *float my boat* like the gorgeous peony...
i buy them closed tight...
ready to burst open...
we watch them at breakfast each morning...
in their teapot...whilst i slurp from mine...
they are truly amazing...

a.m.a.z.i.n.g

have a fab weekend...
we have village stuff on...
our annual village *club day*...
the close the village, floats & balloons day...
we love it...
it passes in front of our house...
so we make banana muffins & coffees for breakfast...
& drag chairs to the pavement to wave at locals we know *floating* past...
total storybook stuff...
perfect for beach-reared aussie kids living in an english village...

i have been trying to meet my sister-in-law in paris this weekend...
sometimes things just can't be *pulled off*...
i love her so much...
we met at uni...
she's the link between the hubster & i...
but it just couldn't happen...
i just couldn't seem to manage it...flights & all...
so i'm thinking of her...
i'll be thinking of her all weekend...
i told her to stand on the steps of Sacre Coeur & to just take Paris in...
to sit in the Shakespeare bookshop opposite Notre Dame & to just while away the hours...
to walk under the Eiffel Tower & to gaze up & smile for us both...
i do all these things whenever we visit Paris- & i would have done them all with her...

some things are just not meant to be...
so i'm going to gaze at these peonies...
indulge in my mags...
&
snuggle away from the rain...
~~~
...happy friday lovelies...
xox
p.s...
just want to say thanks
every comment
every email
every new friend that stops by
makes me smile big & wide
