Summer is on the doorstep of our little beach house...

Morning from our little beach house...cup of tea in hand.

We're flooded with warm winds this morning and the vege garden got a particularly long soak this morning and another fresh layer of organic mulch.

I'm determined to have a crazy, madly abundant garden of vege and herbs this summer!

The school hols are still rambling along- just the way I like it...it almost makes me think I could *Home School* should we be living in some isolated coastal community somewhere ;)

I'd do it- they would not!
Just a simple fact!

How would we fill the house with endless sandy kids, and non-stop lunches, if we home schooled and lived a zillion miles from anyone?
It's just not us!
I'm ok with that....

I'm finding my days are falling into that pre-Summer heaven where I wake early and water my pots and garden each morning...and then, by the third end of my first cup of tea the rest of the house wakes up and we sort what everyone is doing.

The warm mornings are divine...I never really realise quite how much I miss Summer mornings, until they arrive about this time each year.

Why is everything easier and simpler in sunshine?

Hope you are having a gorgeous change of seasons wherever you are...

Coastal Farming {create}

Good morning from the balmy-coastal-summer-town that I seem to have woken up in this morning...

Forget Spring, by the coast here, we have just launched frock, hat and thongs {those being footwear thongs!} into Summer!

Although I've felt that niggling unwell, sore throat, aching body sickness again for the last few days, this weather has made me want to get out and into all the things I love about being by the sea.

For those of you that have been here with me for a loooong time, you're well aware of our story...

For those who are just falling into my little beach house corner of the world, we are almost into our second Summer home from four years living abroad, three kids in tow- in a big old country house in the English countryside.

I still catch myself being slightly humbled by moments of being home.
I still see our coast, where our children are blessed to call home, as a visitor does at times- how can anything be quite so perfect!

I adored so many things about our life abroad- and have bought many a normal English pass time back home with us.

One of my favourites being gardening.
In both country and seaside English towns, in huge cities and in small wee villages, to have a vegetable  garden, or central town *allotment* is not at all unusual!

Most people we knew in our village grew something- and many of them shared hours together in a village allotment verging onto the pastures, and countryside, behind our high street.

Summers really did for many, involve bikes and kids in wagons pulled up to pick strawberries.

For others it was pots on front door steps laden with herbs and flowers.

For others, such as my B.B (British Bestie) - it was a series of garden beds,  reminiscent of a story book,  built at the back of her garden against an old stone wall climbing with roses.

She didn't see it as anything particularly clever, or make-do-and-mend on her part- but I sure did!

I returned with thoughts of my own little allotment - *COASTAL FARMING* .

So when we returned to our lovely big garden, on the coast, with not a piece of food growing on it but two wonderful old lemon and lime trees, planted decades ago by some other owner- I needed to continue this English tradition.

I remember falling in love with the plot we live on.
I recall seeing it as more than grass and trees.
I'm sure my mother always told me I would.

I saw our little corner by the sea as a place to nurture and grow plants, fruit, vegetables, flowers...
A place to teach our kids the rewarding feeling of planting something from seed, and watching it take in the sun, and the care we give it...and then eventually picking it and creating something for our table from it.

Our first year home, for my birthday, we built a decent sized *plot* in a corner of our back garden.
With the help of my brother and his family, we collected enormous pre-used wooden sleepers and good soil, fencing from past projects and sandstone from the many paths our garden seems to have hidden... and we worked hard for a day...together...making something that I hope will last a long time, and create a love of gardening, and producing, for our children.

We had a successful first Summer- a learning curve, as the soil is sandier, and the summer weather harsher here in Australia.

In England, I had watched for frost, and watered sparingly in the summer months.
Here, I water every second day, and I stand for quite a few cups of tea to let it soak to the roots.

There is nothing quite as satisfying!

We're just coming into Spring here- and our youngest has little pots of seeds sprouting in the full, warm sun of our front balcony.
She waters them religiously and will soon plant them into our plot out the back.

Nothing makes her quite so happy before school as checking for "the green bits" sprouting from the tiny paper pots...it makes me happy to see her care for something with hope and excitement.

So...this is a moment of our life that makes me want to remember our home in England, it's a moment of our life that makes me feel I am doing *good* for my family and their health...and it's a moment of our life, that for me, is just so simple and pleasurable and rewarding- that even if I reaped nothing I'd not give it up for anything.

*COASTAL FARMING* at it's simplest!

Do you have a hobby that just makes you feel like you're really making good life decisions?

Do you have any tips on something I really really should be growing?
I'll try anything and everything...I'll even grow rhubarb for my husband!

Enjoy your weekend...it's Friday y'all....!

virtual coffee-a vege plot & Coastal farming...

virtual coffee time...our weekly catch-up...

grab a coffee from the kitchen- i'll meet you at the soon-to-be vege plot in the garden...

we're starting a little *coastal farming* here in this little beach house!

this gals, is the back of our garden...jacaranda tree & previously loved, totally falling down cubby...

we bought this beach house 2 years before we moved to the English country side, with 3 much littler kiddos in tow & not a great deal of time, nor need, to alter the garden...

the cubby was loved, the garden held parties, soccer matches & camp outs...but the kids were smaller...

so much smaller...

now...

ball games only happen in our bigger front garden...the cubby is no longer as stable as it once was & really this back garden, off the kitchen & decking, is needing a bit of a re-think...

we're using it very differently than we once did, since returning from England...& it's exciting to make changes to it for the next part of our life in it...

so...

change one- a vege plot in the sunshine, under a gorgeously big jacaranda tree...

a day's work over the weekend saw the cubby down & the timber sorted into piles...

pieces for up-cycling...& pieces to be thrown out...much of it had rotted over the years, but many pieces will be used again in the design of the fencing & garden beds...the swing gate & some fence brackets...

sydney is built on huge amounts of sandstone & our garden is laden with it...

it's a beautiful creamy, white stone that looks fantastic as edging...garden paths & stone walls...

we'll be creating a path under the tree, & through the centre of the vege beds, to tie it all in with the surrounding garden...

coastal farming on the beaches...

so...if we were really slurping a *builder's tea* in the land laid out for out plot...

i'd show you my English tools-the ones Customs allowed us to crate home- & chat in the sunshine about your gardening experiences...

i'd love your suggestions on layout...thoughts on what to grow...

we managed tomatoes & herbs in the coutry side...the seasons being so much more extreme meant us beach reared Aussies couldn't really get our heads around more than that!

so...this is a love of labour & an important part of our *coming home to the beaches* settling process...

making our life in a bigger city simpler....more fulfilling- with less food miles & an understanding for certain little people {Miss.6} that good food can come from the ground beside our kitchen...!

of course...this garden plot will lead to other longer term changes around the garden...but as the kids say- *we've travelled for the last four years mum- & we aren't going anywhere for ages*...

bless them - they remind me daily that everything doesn't need to be done today...we can spend as much time as we like on it all- as we're not going anywhere!

they are right- we're home for good- but a little travelling on the side will always be part of our family life...

it's actually raining here this morning- all good for a garden plot in the making!

it's school holidays on the coast- gorgeous in all weathers...
~~~~~
grab yourself a piece of sandstone on your way out
let me know if you have any BIG ideas, for a little garden plot, on the coast of Australia
french farm inspired coastal living...loving it!
morning lovely ones...i've been a little MIA this week...
i wonder how long i can blame my *balancing* it all on the huge move home to the beaches from
the English countryside...?
 not for much longer- but whilst i can...i am :)
this week has been very much about sorting life...making decisions about *what* we need to do, to get
this little beach house sorted to accomodate our *bigger-than-when-we-used-to-live-here* kiddos...
to sort this little beach house now it has a very lovely...very flipping busy enthusiastic puppy living
in it's rooms...
i've decided that simple simple simple is the answer...
french farm house inspired simple...on the gorgeous beaches of Oz...
coastal farm-inspired living...
 we're waaay past the plastic baby toy stage...although miss.6 does have an incredible imaginary
world of miniatures constantly in progress on her bedroom floor...
we're waaay past lots of little ones having play group on the lawn...
so simple, for the first time in this little beach house, is totally achievable...
i'm thinking that *sharing* the spaces with y'all here will get me organising each room as we
make our way through...together...
so...today you are getting the sitting room...
a little coastal house with a lot of french farm house love in it...
our last four years of travel have very much influenced *how* we are choosing to live...
none of it seems to link to any of the *coastal-dictated-this-is-what-beach-living-star-fish-collecting*
should look like mainstream shops i used to frequent!
it's all coming together very much from the heart in *how* we want to live...
as we work our way through this little beach house...i'm loving the aesthetic mix that is being
created...
i love that our vege garden planning reminds us of our big old country house in the English
countryside...
i love that there will be a surf board or two leaning up alongside that vege garden...
i love that our sitting room feels like the wonderful old village houses we stayed in throughout the
French countryside...
& i love that there is Australian sunshine pouring in on this room through the coastal windows...
little miss.6, audrey would love her room to be up next...
i'm thinking you'd like to see my herbs planted in french tubs...twice...after the puppy dug them
up the first time.... hmmm....!!!
will keep you posted on the house tours...
thanks for all your comments & emails gals...and your thoughts on vege garden...
i've never had one in the Southern Hemisphere- i'm madly excited about it...
yep- my life is BIG! :)
have a good one!
love to hear your thoughts on coastal french inspired living
it's rocking my little world today!
beach house living down under...
g'day sweet bloggy friends...
we are connected *for this moment*- so i'm here *for this moment*...
life is pretty flippin GREAT in this country down under by the sea...
the kids look taller...fresher...they are swimming like they've never not been here...
little Miss.6 is approaching it all with such endearing *gusto*- our front balcony has become a little
botanical lab showing all things Australian...banksia's...bindi's...cicarda shells...christmas beetles...
she is catching up on a childhood under the Australian sun she can't recall she was so tiny when we left
for the English countryside...
it makes me swell with pride & a new love for our little beach existence here...
the house is getting a lotta love too...boxes are still being unpacked &  treasures found...
the walls have all been freshly painted white white white & the floorboards stained a deep dark rich
luxurious brown...
for me....a simple, gorgeous fresh backdrop to combine *all* our collected goodies...
when that crate is dropped on our front lawn from ol'Blighty i am gonna be in home heaven...
coastal farming...country coastal...
the new decorating term for gals who love both sides of the globe...two *ways* of living...
we're sorting life from the bottom up- drivers licences, insurances, school gear etc...but amongst all this
we are planning...sorting paintings on walls...arranging shells in vintage boxes...
when out connection allows me to upload more than two pickies- i'm going be sharing the lot
with you all...
happy monday to you lovelies...
see ya when random borrowed wi-fi allows.....xxx
12.11.11
coastal farming-the look of an ocean-loving-country-living gal...
coastal farming- where our love of the ocean lives alongside our love of the countryside....
brought up on the coast- salty sandy feet...freckles on the nose...& now thrown into the gorgeous
countryside with wellies at the door...it makes for a lovely way to live...
it makes for a house of treasured collected pieces that make up these two sides of our life...
i now have *two passions* for how i want us to live- and *coastal farming* seems to encompass
them both...
if i could find us a little farm on the coast somewhere- that's where i'd see out my days...
we could have horses for *the girls*...a football pitch for *the boy*...
& an ocean for *us all*...
so...till that little piece of heaven falls into my lap...
i am surrounding us with *a way of living* that embraces that...
seashells & french farm chairs...
drifted wood & farm milk crates...
it gives me a sense of *what we've done* moving abroad...
a balance of what is now *the two sides of my heart*...
what now *makes up our children*...
my surroundings are paramount to my daily attitude...
i'd like to say i don't mind how we *live*...
that it's not important how *things look*...
that i'm just happy we're all here together...but that would be quite a lie- i admit it...
the rest of my life is good...really good, when i'm visually surrounded by things that i love...
the things that make me smile...that remind me of wonderful memories...
if it all looks good...i feel good...
shallow? not in my book...content....absolutely
i can be momentarily flippant- when i flick through a magazine & see a wonderfully modern, simply
laid out room- for just that second- i think aaahhh perfect- that's what we need...
we've all had those moments...
i can fall in love with a whallop of totally different looks as i flick through one magazine, but i know
what rocks my boat...what makes our house our home...
so...as i can't give up my milk crates...or my array of white farm chairs...or my treasured shells...
or my drift wood collection...or my french farm crates...or my striped cushions...or my collection of
beach frocks...i have decided that *coastal farming* is the way we shall live with, or without, that little
place of heaven on the ocean front...
a bikini & hunter wellies- now there's a fashion statement to represent our house!
happy weekend lovely bloggy friends
i have something really really really big to share on monday
&
i just may need you a little more than usual
so here he is...filling his pockets, a block from our big old country house...sand & cockles- bless him...
experience...
for a child that will not eat sausages & spuds- an english fave- he amazes us with seafood...
collecting cockles is wonderful for kids...collecting *food* straight from nature's garden...
he scooted home laden down & we googled a few recipes together...
throwing them in a colander...washing of the sea water...counting our haul...all memories...
