bo-ho love & my dad...

wow...we gals are seriously *into* our bread!

if any of you have managed to co-erce your other half into building you an outdoor bread oven let me know!

it's a *girl thing*...the love of carbs...

lipgloss & carbs...& my day is off to a perfect start!

sometimes, beyond the lipgloss & carbs, i wonder what kind of gal i am...

you know...there's the classic working gal, the fashionista, the beach babe, the country gal, the vintage-rock-chick...

they list *types* of gals in magazines all the time...

i've never really put myself into one pile or another...

i'm the one who is in the other list...the complicated...everyday-is-a-new-day-list...

i'm like this is all facets of my life...fashion, our house, books...
all are an eclectic mix that seems to work...

i like to call it boho...

even though i know it's absolutely not...kate hudson is boho...sienna miller is boho...
but just sometimes i like to pretend i'm in that boho list too....

so with all my linen french stripes & vintage florals...
my giant glittering disco balls & streams of lights...
my beach-life white throws on the sofa's & my wooden floor boards...
i also love a big dose of the industrial...

i totally love a pretty old chandelier...but i'd rather an industrial inspired one...
& yep it took all my husbands physical strength to stop me taking this one outa the ceiling & stashing it into the back of the people mover...

{& look at that wall paper- it was all the way up those stairs...i tell you...could.hardly.bare.it!}

it's the *boho* in me...tee hee!!

my dad is one of those dads...you know the ones that make amazing lights out of old brocante signage letters picked up in his travels....

he seriously can re-work anything he comes across from the hardware store to the junk yard & i want it all...
i covet the things he creates...hell my husband covets the things he creates...

we once needed a really large coffee table for the three kiddos & i couldn't find one anywhere...
my dad bought a big old art desk...complete with drawers...
cut the legs down and painted them white...
sanded the top off & delivered it to my house on the beaches....

ready-to-go!!

it looked incredible & it sorted my dilhemma...we adore that big old art-desk-coffee-table...

so it is my dad that i thank for my boho-ness...

vintage flowers & industrial grey...disco balls & linen...

...right up there with lipgloss & carbs....

...thanks dad...

  1. I can imagine you as a boho girl, right up there with Kate and Sienna, actually. I think it is wonderful to be a mixture of things and to have a love of lots of different styles.

I think that is definitely one thing that my blog has done for me.....over the time I have been creating it, I have almost seen my own style emerging and it's become clearer to me - if that makes sense! I think reading more blogs and magazines and seeing other peoples styles has also done that for me, sort of clarified my likes and dislikes.

Fabulous photos, I love them all....I never wanted to live behind gates but I think I quite live with those quite easily :)

Your Dad sounds amazing, such a talent to be able to make things.... to make anything really.

When we went to Italy last summer and visited the house where my father in law was born and where his mother actually lived until about 10 years ago....the bread oven was actually there, outside in the courtyard wall....it was GORGEOUS!! No one lives there now so it just sits there alone....I tell you, if there had been a way to dig it out of the wall and carry it through customs, I would have done. I loved the history of it as much as anything.

It might have been a different story if I had had you and your people carrier there, I'm sure we could have found a way ;)

Have a lovely day :) xx

  2. And a precious Dad he is!
I lost mine to Cancer last year and he was one of those Dads that would turn his hand to anything. I feel somewhat consoled with the fact that I am more like him and his ways than I realised when he was alive. Im a dabbler too and will have a go at just about anything just like him. (and a hoarder!)

  5. Your darling Dad sounds similar to mine - able to make something out of nothing, and the best handyman a girl could ever have. I like to think I'm a little bit like him. I know I've learnt my 'give it a go' attitude from him, and I can thank him for teaching me things like how to change a car tyre and jumpstart a car engine. All the things a young lady needed tomknow beforebshe was allowed to borrow the family car!
And I'm like you with my boho sensibilities too. Eclectic whimsy I call it!

  7. Dads always leave an impression on us girls... my dad told me "never regret the things you haven't done and only regret things that you have"... With this in mind I quit my job and went to Australia, and have never looked back since... He really is an inspiration... Raised Catholic, he is now a full on Budhist... he dedicates a huge chunk of his life to charity work... lives with a terminal illness, but always wakes up ready to take on a new day and even taking on new hobbies... at the moment it's gardening... The hubby and I are blown away by his verve for life... He's not well enough to travel to the USA anymore... which I try not to think about, but we speak every other day and I pray that he'll be here for my next visit home! Dad's really do make the world a colourful place! Lx

  9. Hello sweet - I agree with Simone (quelles surprise) about finding one's style through blogging. I can see a page and think YES in an instant; I know what is my cuppa tea. Somewhere in between New England, Scandinavian, Cottage, Retro, Quirky, Palest blue, Creamy white loveliness :-) Lou x

  10. Hi sweet melissa, how lucky are you to have a handyman dad! Your table sounds awesome!
Isnt it nice that the older we get the more we `become` who we really are!!? If you know what I mean.. I love the idea that we grow into our authentic self as time passes and we are wiser and less concerned with what others think (except for those who love us and we love, but we know that they love the real person that we are)... Do you know what I mean? I dont know if I am making much sense!!
well, you have a gorgeous day boho lady!!!
    hugs, Laura xxx

  11. Boho...the best thing to be, and I think it comes in all shapes, sizes and definitions! I like the sound of your dad. Mine is completely useless in the handyman department but a love nonetheless :)

  12. Your dad sounds amazing. My dad was similar but his gift was being able to fix anything.

And I love industrial too. I'm on the hunt for an old industrial cart that I can turn into a little bar in my dining room. I see it in my head, but have yet to come across it in real life.

  13. Hey there! I just found your blog through hand made me and it's just fabulous! I loved this post, it really spoke to me. I also have a wonderfully creative father who can make anything out of anything :) And I'm also a big mix of a little bit of everything, sometimes I struggle with that but after reading your thoughts about it I felt more ok with the craziness and mixing that is me. Thank you!
