making a vintage cake plate stand & a virtual coffee...

morning all...
welcome to a virtual coffee...
i'm having mine with a little gal, covered in a random rash attached to my arm...
we've been like this for a couple of days now...
attached...& bless her little *itchy* thing she has been lovely...
so coffee this week sweet friends is going no further than our couch with lots of talk of the gorgeous cake-plate stand we created this week...
purely as Audrey & i hope to inspire you to make one...

this is so easy...& so simple...& makes you feel you've achieved soooo much from nothing...
which is what you need when you have a little one attached to your arm 24/7...
that's all got to inspire you...surely...
see that bottom plate...?
well that is, to date, the most loved plate i have found in ol'blighty...
larger than a side plate but smaller than a dinner plate...
{yep if you know the name of this email me...please}
gorgeously blue & white...
the edging detail is lovely...
but i have never found another...
so it was the perfect plate to feature as the first layer of our cake stand...

the other two are also lovely...both thrifted from boot-sales for about 50pence a piece...
so *that size* plate first...
a side plate next...
& a tea cup saucer for the top...
if you are anything like me...i cannot leave a lone saucer at a flea market or car boot sale...
i use them for cup cakes constantly...
slices of cake...
muffins...
they are the perfect size...
& if you stick to a colour scheme they look gorgeous across a table...
this is my blue & white pile...errrr...i also have a pink floral set...& ummmm green & white...
between you & me, since we are having a coffee & sharing...
i know think i may have an addiction...

anyhoo...
between the plates i have teacups...
both thrift finds that set me back a pound each...
again, both different, which is lovelier...
plonked upside down & glued on...
too easy...really you can glue china together...
this is where my patience is tried...& where Audrey & i snuggled on the couch to watch some good old fashioned tele...
i love re-hashed old films for kids...
especially when the poor little kiddo is rashy & itching...

would you like another coffee to take all this china talk in...?
or a water with Audrey...?
this is about all we can manage together, Audrey & i...
sticking china & watching movies....& scratching...
we're not our usual *here's the pink chair, can we wait on you all morning* selves today...
you'll have to go back here to be looked after like that...

thanks for taking my mind of a poor sick kiddo for a moment
&
thanks for taking little Audrey's mind off scratching for a moment
let us know what you think of our thrifty lovely cake plate stand
or
give us a good home-made remedy for itchy skin
~~~
remember to pop over to Amy's for another pot or two *here*
~~~

...thanks lovelies...
&
welcome to all you new followers
if you're new here
hope you enjoyed our weekly *virtual coffee*

  1. I do hope the itching stops soon...it can't be much fun :( I love your cake stand and I especially loved the image of you rescuing lone plates and saucers from car boot sales all over the place. That was all kinds of sweet :)

  3. Oh you poor thing Audrey, sit on your hands if you must but please don't scratch. You and your mum are very clever. The cake stand is delicious looking.

  4. I'm having a virtual wine, but I'm sure you'll be OK with that! Poor wee Audrey - my best home remedy is a not-too-hot bath with lots of baking soda in it. Brilliant for unexplained itches.
    Love the cake stand, and you gorgeous pile of mismatched saucers next to it too!
    Treasure your little girls day together.

  7. Hi sweet mel, and your lovely audrey!! well, I can never go past.... antihistamines for itches... or.... cortisone cream. I know, some people are aghast, but you know, when you see a child suffer, (like sam did) a little itch can be cured so easily and he did have some... it felt cruel not to cure it for him when other things couldnt be cured... but every parent is different... each child is different. Thats my opinion for what its worth...
    Love your gorgeous cake stand! Could the plate be a fish plate? a guess... nothing more....
    I love the ribbon pattern around the edge. hugs for your sweet audrey! Hope she feels better so soon!
    Hugs for you too hun!!

  8. I've seen people make thees before in Blogland but there always seemed to be sanding and drilling involved, so I much prefer the sound of yours! What kind of glue did you use?

  11. Poor Audrey. Hope the itching eases soon. I don't have a home made remedy, but I have used calomile lotion in the past. It was a pink liquid that dried on my skin and took away the itch. I'm also a great believer that lavender oil can help most things and when I had chicken pox a few years ago I would soak for ages in a warm lavender bath.
    Lovely plates-always a winner with anything in blue and white.

  14. Hi Miss Melissa and little miss Audrey!
    I have girls with itches, some times worse then others, I will check with my mother in law (she used to work at the ER, perhaps she knows a homemade thingy). I truly hope it will go away soon, but in the mean time you guys are making some lovely things! what a great idea to glue it, much better than drilling.
    A little package is on it's way for Miss E., hope it will be on time for her b'day.
    Oh, what might help it a cold washcloth, just to get the first itch-burn cooled down...
    OK, over and out from Maureen xx

  16. Oh, poor Ella, i hope she is feeling better soon, isn;t itching just the worst!? glad she got to snuggle and hang out with her mama though.
    i love your cake stand girls. love, love, love! blue is my favorite color and no, i could never leave a lonesome saucer by itself once i spotted it, either. i love that beautiful stack of plates next to the cake stand as well. i have been collecting small ones as i have promised charlotte a good old- fashioned tea party this spring or summer. did you use gorilla glue? i was never sure what type of glue will hold china together?
    thanks for coffee...now i am dreaming of my own cake stand! : )

  19. Ooooh i'm loving that cake stand idea. Really got me thinking about my 1000 plates that don't match anything (yep I have that same obsession-it's a good one isn't it!). I'm thinking we might be a bit similar. Come back to Sydney so I can serve you a cake off my soon to be created Melissa inspired stand!! x

  20. Hoping your sweet Audrey is feeling better by now:( What a lovely way to spend the day...your cake stand is FABULOUS and I L.O.V.E it!!! I can't believe you got a Burleighware 'Calico' saucer for 50p...what a SCORE! This is one of my favourite projects ever, Miss Melissa, you clever lady!! Wish I could pop in to have a cake of your cake plate (ok, I am quite partial to a particular movie with red glittery shoes too!). Such gorgeous inspiration, I would love to make a cake stand like yours one day. ~ Txx

  23. What a beautiful idea! I stumbled across your fascinating blog while looking for vintage cake stands for a 'high tea' party I'm having for my 6 yo. In Australia, we call the plate between the side plate (bread & butter plate) and dinner plate an "entree" plate. Having said that though, my mum's vintage Doulton set has B&B, entree, small and standard sized dinner plates. I'll be back for coffee next week I think!

    Here's hoping your little attachment is feeling all better, it's nice that they want to be so 'with' you though when ill.
